COLLINS: Celebration time for city staff

Apr 28, 2024 | 6:00 AM

I HOPE THE STAFF AT CITY HALL have been enjoying this weekend. It’s been a big couple of weeks.

First, they get the council to bar the mayor (and council itself) from the inner workings of City Hall, such that the mayor can’t get to his own office. It’s supposedly all part of a security audit — which I’m not opposed to. Security in public buildings is a growing concern, but normally you would direct that security toward those coming to visit the facility, not at your own people.

And there shouldn’t be any leftover files left out in the open after hours for anyone to browse through, so I’m not sure what the mayor is supposed to prowling around for. He has no need to be in the building after hours, outside his own office. But since the inmates are ruling the institution, I guess they can make whatever rules they want. Can Byron McCorkell get into his office after hours? If he can, so should others, including mayor and council.

And of course, the other big thing city employees are celebrating is a sweet 12 per cent wage hike. Four per cent each year plus a four per cent cost of living adjustment. Doesn’t get any better than that. While other negotiated settlements recently seem to be in the same range, 12 per cent over just two years is a big plus. Will their productivity increase? Probably not.

And relentlessly it goes from bad to worse. The city must have already had a pretty good idea where things would wind up, because the money had already been accounted for in the budget. It’s a big raise with little serious negotiation.

While we’ve been blasting the mayor, maybe we should turn our attention to the councillors themselves. In the meantime, staffers have a glass of bubbly on behalf of those of us who didn’t get any increase this year. We’ll just hunker down with our glass of water and gruel and watch you enjoy the fruits of our labour.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
