KAMLOOPS — An organization promoting electoral reform and proportional representation made an appearance at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market Saturday morning.

Fair Vote Kamloops was marking a Day of Action for Proportional Representation, hoping to raise awareness about the upcoming referendum on electoral reform later this year.

Team Leader Gisela Ruckert says the current voting system doesn’t serve BC residents as well as it should.

“Currently, only about 50 per cent of voters see their preferences reflected in the outcome, and that would be dramatically improved under a proportional system,” Ruckert said. “Almost everyone’s vote counts in terms of seeing their choices reflected in the outcome.”

Ruckert says most democratic countries use some form of proportional representation. She says Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom do not.
