Blue Jays add Canadian Pompey, six other players as rosters expand

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays added seven players to their roster on Friday, inlcluding Canadian outfielder Dalton Pompey.

Rosters expanded from 25 men to 40 on Thursday as teams enter the stretch.

Pitchers Danny Barnes, Ryan Tepera and Matt Dermody join Pompey on the Blue Jays’ big-league roster beginning Friday night in Tampa Bay. Second baseman Devon Travis, who was optioned to rookie-league Bluefield on Thursday, catcher Josh Thole and outfielder Darrell Ceciliani round out the other roster moves.

Pompey, who played 34 games for the Blue Jays last season, will make his first appearance with Toronto this year.

The Mississauga, Ont., native batted .270 with a .349 on-base percentage through 93 games with triple-A Buffalo.

Travis was recalled from Bluefield while Thole is back after signing a Major League contract with the club on Thursday. The knuckleball specialist had been designated for assignment and cleared waivers earlier in the week.

Travis is batting .293 through 74 games with Toronto in a break-out season after shoulder injuries limited him to just 62 games in 2015.

Thole is batting .158 with three doubles and seven RBIs in 47 games. The Blue Jays now have three catchers on their roster after trading for Dioner Navarro last week.

Barnes, a 26-year-old right-handed reliever split his 2016 season between double-A New Hampshire and Buffalo. He had a 1.01 earned-run average in 35 2/3 innings with New Hampshire and a 0.35 ERA in 25 2/3 innings with Buffalo. He has a 4.50 ERA in four innings with Toronto this season.

Tepera has been up and down from triple-A all season. The righty has a 2.58 ERA over 45 1/3 innings in Buffalo this season and a 2.89 ERA in 9 1/3 innings for Toronto.

Dermody, a 26-year-old left-hander, moved up three levels from high-A to triple-A this year. He has a 2.76 ERA through 16 1/3 innings with Buffalo. The Blue Jays designated infielder Matt Dominguez for assignment to make room for Dermody on the 40-man roster.

The left-handed Ceciliani is batting .266 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs over 82 triple-A games. He’s had limited success in his 26 at-bats in Toronto this season, hitting .115 with two doubles.
