Sprinkler system may have caused Vernon mudslide

VERNON, B.C. — Experts have issued reports on what caused a mudslide that swept down into a swimming pool at Vernon condo complex.

It happened at the Mandalay Condos on Okanagan Landing Road Tuesday.

Two women in a pool at the time narrowly escaped injury.

City spokesperson Nick Nilsen says geo-technical and structural engineers have looked into it.

“The slide may have been caused by an irrigation system at a higher elevation either having failed or being left on, and that saturated the ground and lead to the  slide,” says Nilsen to Beach Radio News.

Nilsen says the watering was on private property above the Mandalay development.

Engineers now say the area is stable, and it’s been turned over to the property owners for insurance and clean-up.

“The affected residents were temporarily moved to a place to gather, in the basement of the Yacht Club, while the engineering reports were being completed. And when both of the reports indicated that the situation was stable, we deemed it safe to re-enter the building,” adds Nilsen.
