Toronto Argonauts acquire quarterback Drew Willy from Winnipeg Blue Bombers

TORONTO — Defensive back T.J. Heath didn’t have much time to enjoy his best game as a Toronto Argonaut.

Moments after registering two interceptions in Toronto’s 33-21 home win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday night, word circulated in the Argos dressing room that he’d been dealt to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a deal for quarterback Drew Willy.

“By making this trade, not only have we added depth to the quarterback position for this season, but we have added a young, talented and experienced quarterback for the future,” said Argos general manager Jim Barker in a statement.

The Bombers acquired Heath, a 2017 first-round pick and 2018 third-round selection for Willy, their former starter who became expendable with the emergence of quarterback Matt Nichols.

The Bombers have won six straight games since Nichols took over as their starter.

But Winnipeg also dealt a 2018 fourth-round pick to Montreal for veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn.

Dan LeFevour earned the win in his first Toronto start Sunday. He was replacing veteran Ricky Ray, who’s out with a fractured rib.

Willy, 29, is in his fifth CFL season and third with Winnipeg. He has made 28 career starts, completing 513-of-781 passes (65.7 per cent) for 6,385 yards with 31 TDs and 24 interceptions.

“Drew has all of the abilities we look for in a quarterback — leadership, poise, accuracy and a strong arm,” said Argos coach Scott Milanovich.

“We have watched Drew play a lot over the years and have liked him for quite some time. We think he has a ton of potential to be a very good player for us for years to come.”

Willy began his CFL career with Saskatchewan in 2012 and was traded to Winnipeg on Feb. 6, 2014.
