UBC president Ono commends ‘thoughtful’ report on sexual assaults
VANCOUVER — The University of British Columbia’s new president says he commends an expert panel for its critical report calling for a major overhaul of the school’s approach to sexual assaults.
Santa Ono released a 52-page report to students, faculty and staff on Monday, months after the UBC-appointed panel submitted it to the president’s office.
“I want to commend the University Sexual Assault Panel for a thoughtful, comprehensive report that will help inform dialogue and spark further engagement on campus as we work to improve our policies and practices for addressing and responding to sexual assault,” he said in a statement.
The report calls for the university to undertake sweeping changes to counter the “general mistrust” on campus and the perception that UBC has downplayed the severity of the issue and avoided responsibility.
