‘Concerned citizen’ blasts city hall for excess garbage at Riverside Park

KAMLOOPS — Lorne Lakusta says he’s never seen it so bad.

He’s referring to the amount of garbage piling up along the shores of Riverside Park on the Rivers Trail from the west side of the park to the Overlanders Bridge. 

Lakusta, a concerned citizen and avid boater, says he’s raised his concerns with the CIty of Kamloops but hasn’t heard back yet.

“I’m upset because our river is coming up real fast and a lot of that garbage is sitting in the water now and in a couple of days it’s going to be washed down the river.”

He says the garbage includes shopping carts, old tents, clothing and other miscellaneous items.

Lakusta lays the blame on “tenters” who’ve taken up residence in the park.

“The city allows the tenters to camp in the park. These transients are polluting our waterways. They (City Hall) want us to keep our grasslands and campsites clear and clean and right downtown in our jewel park it’s (garbage) right there.”

In order to deal with all the garbage, he’s organized a park cleanup starting at 6:00 p.m. tonight.

Lakusta says anyone is welcome to help out.
