Kamloops parks staff to stop using pesticides on city property

KAMLOOPS — City council has voted to cease the use of pesticides in the city’s parks operations.

The vote passed by the same 5-4 margin as the summertime vote to ban pesticide use on residential property.

Council also voted to up its parks budget by $30,000 to make up for not being able to use pesticides, and another $25,000 for public education.

Mayor Peter Milobar was one of the four holdouts saying, “fundamentally I still have that problem with a non-enforcable by-law.”

Other councillors said it would be bad form to force the public to abide by a pesticide ban, but not hold the city operations to the same standard.
