Police out in full force on New Year’s Eve

KAMLOOPS — If you’re driving to and from New Year’s celebrations tonight, prepare to meet the men and women in blue.

Sergeant Mike Pears of RCMP Central Interior Traffic Services says it will be a busy night for road checks, with detachments pledging to add additional staff.

“We’ll be trying to do as many road checks as we can in the area,” said Pears. “We have members up in Clearwater, Merritt, Ashcroft, and Kamloops area as well. There should be CounterAttack road checks anywhere and everywhere.”

Pears says those who don’t take the opportunity to arrange a ride in advance will soon realize it wasn’t worth it, in the event they get pulled over while impaired, or worse, cause a crash.

He adds a common misconception is that after a few hours of sleep, there is a possibility you might not be impaired anymore. Pears says that’s not usually the case.
