First Nations stay patient with Ajax process

KAMLOOPS — After 5 days of discussions, the Secwepmec and Scheetchestn Joint Council Review on the Kghm-Ajax project wrapped up today, at Moccasin Square Garden.

13 members from each band were on the council, which looked at a different issue surrounding the proposed mine on each of the five days: governance of the land, and the effects the mine could have on land, water, and air in the area, as well as the proposed economic benefit for the First Nations. Terry Deneault, Acting Chief and Councillor with Scheetchestn says the feedback from the council has been invaluable.

“One of the things that lifted up my heart was to hear the youth speak,” said Deneault. “These [youth] are the one’s that carry our flag now… [they] are the one’s that are going to move ahead with this process for many generations to come.”

Tk’emlups Indian Band chief Fred Seymour says he’s willing to continue working with KGHM representatives to move the project forward, but added he’s willing to wait until he feels the concerns of his people have been addressed.

“We’ve been meeting with [KGHM Representatives] weekly,” Seymour said. “We will work collectively with them… I think time is not of the essence. We’re a very patient people. You can hang that dollar in front of us, and we’re not going to jump for it.”
