More than 530 wildfires continue to rage across B.C.

KAMLOOPS — The end of August may be near, but there are still 532 wildfires burning across the province.

Two of the biggest blazes are located in the Northwest Fire Centre: the 118,000 hectare Alkali Lake wildfire and the 91,000 hectare Shovel Lake wildfire.

And while cooler temperatures of late have helped matters, the amount of rain is nowhere near enough to douse all the blazes.

“Unfortunately, not a whole lot of rain in some areas that really needed it, especially that central B.C. area where some of the largest wildfires that we have are currently burning,” says Fire Information Officer Kyla Fraser with the BC Wildfire Service.

“But that definitely was a bit of a relief to the situation; nothing season-ending but certainly it’s well received.”

Things have been so bad this August that this wildfire season is now the second worst wildfire season in provincial history — after last year — with 970,000 hectares of forest scorched. Last year 1.2 million hectares of forest burned.

Sadly, with the number of fires currently burning province-wide, this wildfire season is far from over and it could still take top spot.

“No, definitely we still have quite a lot of fires going across the landscape, still facing some challenging conditions but hopefully as we move closer to fall, with these better weather conditions, we might start to get an upper hand on the situation.”

Closer to home, good news to report on the Helmcken Falls fire in Wells Gray Provincial Park.

Now that the wildfire smoke has cleared, Nicole Bonnett with the Kamloops Fire Centre says crews got a better look at the blaze today and note there has been no new growth on the 37-hectare fire.
