Could the worst be over as 512 B.C. wildfires rage?

VERNON — There’s a possibility the worst may be over in terms of B.C.’s horrific wildfire season although 512 fires continue to burn through the province today and there were five new fire starts Wednesday.

BC Wildfire Service spokesperson Kevin Skrepnek says temperatures in the province are not expected to reach the highs of July and August heading into September.

However, he also has some cautionary words for people planning to go camping this long weekend.

“We don’t want people getting complacent out there,” says Skrepnek. “It’s still very dry in many areas and we still have a campfire ban in place for almost all of the entire province.”

Skrepnek says the central section of the province, where massive wildfires are burning, remains bone dry and are in need of rain.

He adds that some forest fires may continue to burn until the winter months.

The good news is the trend in cooler temperatures heading into September.

“I think it is probably safe to say at this time that the worst is over but…definitely some areas of the province that are still under threat.”

In the Kamloops Fire Centre, 82 wildfires are burning.

He says there have been 417 fires in that region alone so far and 53-thousand hectares have burned.

In terms of fire suppression so far this season, the province has spent $360-million, including $41-million in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Currently, 45-hundred personnel remain on the wildfire lines.
