Leon Reinbrecht sentenced to three years for fatal Shuswap boat crash

KAMLOOPS — The ongoing legal saga involving Leon Reinbrecht finally appears to have come to an end.

In BC Supreme Court this afternoon, Reinbrecht was sentenced to three years in prison after he was convicted last fall on two counts of criminal negligence.

Justice Sheri Donegan also handed him a five year ban from operating a vessel, to begin after his sentence is over.

In July of 2010, Reinbrecht was at the controls of a speedboat on Shuswap Lake when it crashed into a houseboat near Magna Bay.

The crash killed houseboat operator Ken Brown and injured eight other people.

Reinbrecht’s trial only began in February of 2015, and the entire legal proceeding was fraught with lengthy delays.

Last month, Reinbrecht’s lawyer Joe Doyle argued his convictions should be overturned because he was denied his right to a speedy trial, but Justice Donegan upheld the convictions.

Doyle then asked for a sentence of two years in prison, while Crown Prosecutor Neil Flanagan put forward a range of two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half years in prison.
