Mitch Harlock’s legacy lives on through bursary

KAMLOOPS — A Norkam Secondary student has been awarded a bursary, honouring a Kamloops teenager who lost his battle with cancer.

The Kamloops Firefighters Charitable Society has awarded bursaries in memory of Mitch Harlock, the Westsyde teen who passed away last year, after a 4 year battle with cancer. Jessica Guthier is one of two recipients of the bursary, and will attend UBC Okanagan’s Engineering Program in the fall. She says the bursary means a lot.

“I have a little bit of stress free when it comes to money, a big part is paying for tuition, so getting this $500 is going to help me in terms of paying my tuition and my fees for dorms and stuff, so I’m just very grateful,” says Guthier.

The bursary was created for graduating students of School District 73 who have come from adverse circumstances, but have demonstrated leadership qualities. Mitch’s father Will, is a Kamloops Firefighter and says the bursary helps to keep his son’s spirit alive.

“These kids are going to be able to do this because that’s our future, to have that grace and determination with such a difficult background, that’s pretty much what Mitch did when he was going through his treatments, he had some pretty tough times but was always going through with a smile,” says Harlock.
