OTTAWA —    B-C created thousands of jobs in the accommodation and food services sectors in May, bolstering national employment numbers and helping the country stick to the 5.8 per cent unemployment rate it has posted since February.

But Statistics Canada says, overall, the economy lost 75-hundred jobs last month as full-time positions fell by 31-thousand and the loss was only partially offset by gains in part-time work.

B-C’s unemployment rate nudged downward in May by two basis points to 4.8 per cent, in part because of the strong job creation showing in certain sectors.

It is the best rate in the country, and the only rate below five percent. Quebec is next best, a full half point behind B.C.’s, at 5.3 percent.
