KAMLOOPS — Another Fulton & Company Cup and another top ranking for the South Kam senior girls’ basketball team, not only in Kamloops during this city championship but also across the province in the girls’ AA rankings.

“It’s a compliment to be back No. 1 again after such a good season,” said Grade 12 player Maddy Gobeil, who’s already committed to playing basketball next year at the University of the Fraser Valley. “I think it’s good we have the pressure on us to know that we have to work up to that level again this year.”

Three starters return to the Titans this season, including Gobeil, who feels South Kam has the team to go back to the title game and win.

“I think a lot of it is going to be our effort and how we decide to practice, so if we practice at the level we’ll play in a game, then I think we’ll be able to get back up to the level we were at last season,” noted Gobeil.

Del Komarniski returns on the sideline hoping to guide the Titans to another title. He says the new team needs to find its own identity, but there are big pieces from last year like 6’6″ forward Olivia Morgan-Cherchas that will prove valuable as the season wears on and teams take a run at the defending champions.

“You’re definitely going to get people’s best games when you play them,” said Komarniski. “I think that can only make you better. I think if people are coming and they’re competing hard against you, as long as you’re answering the bell and competing hard as well, then that’s going to make you stronger in the long run.”

Morgan-Cherchas is not taking part in the city championship, away with the Canadian junior national team. But she’ll be back for the start of the regular season in the new year when the Titans begin their journey to go back to back.

“It would be really cool,” said Gobeil if the school can repeat as champions for the first time since the Titans accomplished it in 2012 and 2013 with the likes of Maya Olynyk and Emma Wolfram. “It would make a really good impact to make on the community and the school, and show what girls basketball is capable of in Kamloops.”
