Next Generation 911 system to launch across RCMP Southeast District next week
KAMLOOPS — RCMP detachments across British Columbia will begin switching to a new “Next Generation 911” system next week, with the rollout expected to take effect across the Southeast District on Thursday (Oct. 29).
In a statement, BC RCMP says Next Generation 911 (NG 911) will replace infrastructure that is decades old, allowing for faster and more informed communication in emergency situations.
NG 911 will launch on Monday at the BC RCMP headquarters in Surrey and at the RCMP Island District in Courtenay. The RCMP Southeast District in Kelowna and North District in Prince George will follow suit on Oct. 29, while the Coquitlam and Langley RCMP detachments following suit on Nov. 3.
“During this initial phase of the migration to NG 911, there will be no noticeable difference in how your community can access help from the RCMP,” a statement from the RCMP said. “Just like today, callers will continue to reach a 911 call taker at E-Comm 9-1-1 who then ensure the emergency call reaches the police or appropriate first responder agency for the situation.”
