Kamloops, Kelowna team up to modernize fire dispatch centres

KELOWNA — Kamloops Fire Rescue Dispatch (KFRD) has partnered with its Kelowna counterpart to modernize emergency dispatch services throughout the Southern Interior.

A news release issued by Kelowna Fire Communications Centre (KFCC) Wednesday (May 6) says the two services are upgrading their systems through “shared Next Generation 911 technology”.

Next Generation 911 is touted to be faster and more reliable than the former analogue-based system.

The release notes the first phase of implementation has taken place by introducing the Next Generation 911 system to both dispatch centres.

The second phase will involve enacting “additional backup safeguards that allow the dispatches to support one another during large-scale emergencies, extreme call surges, or in the unlikely event a primary and backup dispatch site is unavailable.”

“This partnership strengthens the reliability of fire dispatch services,” said Assistant Chief Scott Johnson of Kamloops Fire Rescue. “The added safeguards ensure emergency calls can continue to be received and dispatched even in the event of a major disruption, helping protect service continuity during rare but high-impact emergencies.”

The release says the new technology will not result in changes in staffing or service levels, and each dispatch centre will continue to operate as an autonomous organization.

The changeover to Next Generation 911 is being mandated by the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) and is being funded by separate $5.1-million grants for each organization through the B.C. government.

KFRD serves 32 difference fire departments while KFCC serves 58 departments.
