‘Digger’ May Be One Of The Biggest Box Office Bombs Of All Time

Tom Cruise’s latest film, Digger, is projected to lose $250 million by the end of its theatrical run. The Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed satire opened to just $8 million domestically and $21 million globally, with worldwide box office unlikely to surpass $40 million. Production costs totaled between $163–$173 million, with $100 million more spent on marketing. Warner Bros. fully financed the film. Skydance executives, newly in charge after the merger, were stunned by the losses. Cruise plays a paunchy, balding oil billionaire whose wells trigger an environmental catastrophe. The losses place Digger alongside notorious flops like 2012’s John Carter and 2013’s The Lone Ranger.
