Security was on site overnight to ensure fire activity didn’t resume at Emterra. Gorman is asking residents to avoid the area as toxic materials are present at any dump fire. 

The call from the Emterra location on Kelly Douglas Road came in at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday where a plume of black smoke could be seen from across the city. 

Brent Marshall works next door to Emterra. He took note of the scene once a police vehicle with flashing lights pulled into their parking lot. 

“Opened the door up, and Emterra was on fire from one end of the yard all the way to the building and all the way to the other end of the building,” Marshall told CFJC Today. “It was extremely smokey; lots of ash falling down on our building. The smell was horrendous. 

“The wind was pushing directly at our building at that point. Us being a wood shop, having lots of wood in and around the building, definitely made us take a look around and ensure we had no issues on our site after everything has calmed down.”

Since he started working in the area more than 10 years ago, Marshall says there have been at least 10 fires. He adds that fires have been more common within the last few years.
