French Bar Creek wildfire evacuation order expands

70 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has expanded the evacuation order in response to the French Bar Creek wildfire.

The updated evacuation order includes two properties — 7633 and 7780 Watson Bar Road — totaling about 12 properties in Electoral Area “E” (Bonaparte Plateau) in response to the 54,891.52-hectare wildfire.

“If you are in the described area, you must leave immediately. A person must not enter the Evacuation Order area for purposes of residing, occupying, or visiting the area,” said the TNRD.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said a shift in the weather is posing a challenge to crews battling fires in the Big Bar Complex.

“Convective activity will bring localized gusting erratic winds in the later afternoon along with a risk of isolated thunderstorms and the potential for dry lightning,” said the BCWS.

“The combination of dry fuels, clear air and high temperatures is expected to elevate fire behaviour. Into the afternoon (Aug. 22) where convective activity occurs, localized gusting winds will further influence elevated fire behaviour, challenge guards and likely result in additional growth.”

The BCWS said crews are prioritizing structure and infrastructure protection.

“A structure protection crew has assessed and deployed apparatus on the south flank of this fire. They will be testing and maintaining systems as need to ensure they are functioning properly should they need to be activated,” said the BCWS.

“Heavy equipment has repaired the wash out along the road, improving access to the fire.”
