Fighting fire with fire; controlled burning used to combat massive Pear Lake wildfire

CLINTON, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is deploying controlled burning on the massive Pear Lake wildfire in an attempt to stop it from advancing further south.
The burn will target a 370 hectare planned ignition will target an area along the southern flank of the fire – which is in the Pavilion area, north of Highway 99 and west of Highway 97 – to remove fuel before the wildfire can consume it.
“Crews have completed the heavy equipment lines that will support planned ignitions operations along the south flank of the fire today (Aug 14),” said the BCWS.
“These operations bring the fire to safer, workable ground and allows crews to go in and safely extinguish the fires edge to prevent further growth from increased fire behaviour and spot fires.”
