Evacuation orders rescinded for Lillooet-area wildfire

LILLOOET, B.C. — The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) and Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) have downgraded evacuation orders put in place last week due to the raging Riley Creek fire south of Lillooet.

The evacuation orders were put in place Friday (July 31) for the Texas Creek area. The orders covered about 76 properties west of the Fraser River.

Sunday evening, the SLRD downgraded its order for the majority of those properties to an evacuation alert, meaning residents are allowed to return home but must be ready to leave again on very short notice.

Monday morning, the TNRD followed suit for the two properties along Texas Creek Road that are within the TNRD’s Electoral Area ‘I’.

The T’it’q’et and Lytton First Nations have also downgraded evacuation order to alerts on reserves near the Riley Creek fire.

Even though orders are being downgraded and the fire size is unchanged at 1,150 ha, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the fire is still very active.

“The fire continues to burn in very steep and rocky terrain that poses a safety risk for responders,” says the BCWS in an update to its website. “Smoke will be highly visible to the surrounding communities on days where the combination of stronger winds and a rise in temperatures have increased fire activity.”
