Major Labels Push To Ban AI-Generated Songs From Music Charts

A coalition of nearly a dozen major record labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group, is calling on global music charts to disqualify many AI-generated tracks. The companies want charts to only include AI songs that are lawfully made, substantially human-created, and free of streaming fraud concerns. “Tracks created using generative AI systems have been appearing on streaming services, however many of these have been developed with tools that have been trained on artists’ music without authorization,” the companies stated. The move follows a separate push by the RIAA and IFPI urging streaming platforms to explicitly label AI-generated content. All three major labels previously sued AI music generators Suno and Udio in 2024, with settlements reached by UMG and WMG.
