Glen Powell, Richard Linklater Reunite For Lou Gehrig Biopic

Universal Pictures is developing an untitled Lou Gehrig biopic, reuniting acclaimed director Richard Linklater with actor Glen Powell, who previously collaborated on Hit Man and Everybody Wants Some. Powell will star as the legendary Yankees first baseman, nicknamed “the Iron Horse,” who played a then-record 2,130 consecutive games before being diagnosed with ALS. Gehrig died in 1941 at age 37. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels will produce alongside Powell. Simon Rich, a longtime SNL veteran, will write the screenplay. Gehrig’s story was previously told in the 1942 film The Pride Of The Yankees, starring Gary Cooper. His 1939 farewell speech, in which he called himself “the luckiest man on the face of the Earth,” remains one of baseball’s most iconic moments.
