Signal adjustments coming to Desmond Road intersection as Tranquille sewer project proceeds

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops will be adjusting the traffic signal timing at the intersection of Tranquille Road and Desmond Street, near the Brock Shopping Centre.

The change follows feedback concerning traffic delays and congestion caused by a detour that took effect last month to allow crews to work on a major sewer replacement project.

“The changes are intended to accommodate current traffic patterns and improve the flow of vehicles through the area while detour conditions remain in place,” a statement from the city said. “Motorists may notice improved operations at the intersection and are encouraged to continue to use caution and allow extra travel time while construction activities and detours are ongoing.”

“The City appreciates the community’s feedback and patience as we continue to monitor traffic conditions and make adjustments where needed.”

Work at the intersection of Tranquille Road and Southill Street began this month, and all non-local traffic and transit buses have to detour via Desmond Street and Gellrich Avenue before continuing onto Southill Street.

This detour route is likely to remain in place until the project wraps up later this year.

Earlier this week, a noise variance was approved allowing crews to begin working at 4:30 a.m. in an effort to beat the heat.

The two-year-long third phase of the Tranquille Road project between Crestline Street and Southill Street began in June last year, and work has been taking place in stages.

“We also want to remind residents that local businesses in the area remain open and accessible throughout construction, the city statement added. “[We encourage] the community to continue supporting these businesses and visiting the area during the detour period.”

The first phase of work along Tranquille Road west of Crestline Street toward Kamloops Airport was completed in 2017, while the second phase between Southill Street and 12th Street was completed in 2021.
