Western Canada Theatre searching for new executive director

KAMLOOPS — Western Canada Theatre (WCT) will soon be auditioning new candidates to lead the organization.

In an email distributed Tuesday (June 9), the Kamloops theatre company confirms Executive Director Matt Eger “has moved on to new adventures.”

Eger took over WCT’s top job in September, 2024, coming aboard just as a new performing arts centre was approved as part of Build Kamloops.

Eger’s time heading up the organization also included the departure of James MacDonald from the role of artistic director. MacDonald is now suing WCT for wrongful termination.

“Matt has made significant contributions to WCT, including strengthening the company’s financial and [technology] activities, and taking on additional artistic duties during the search for (a) new artistic director, Kelli Fox, which helped lay the groundwork for a successful 50th anniversary season,” said a statement from the WCT board of directors. “We have the best wishes for their bright theatre future.”

“Not only have I had the privilege of helping shepherd WCT through a period of considerable transition, but I have also been fortunate to work alongside an extraordinary community of talented, dedicated people throughout the BC Interior,” said Eger. “I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have been part of Western Canada Theatre during this chapter in its history.”

WCT has now posted the executive director position, with a closing date of June 17.
