KAMLOOPS — B.C.’s Minister of Environment and Parks was in Kamloops Friday (May 22) to speak about a new outdoor recreation strategy that aims to build a more resilient and thriving sector in the province.

It’s being touted as a first-of-its-kind strategy that aims to recognize the key role the outdoor recreation sector has on the provincial economy. It’s part of the broader ‘Look West’ strategy, the provincial government’s plan to grow the economy.

Kamloops was the site for a first-of-its-kind conference focused entirely on outdoor recreation. Held at Thompson Rivers University, it aimed to bring together a number of stakeholders to explore how outdoor recreation supports tourism communities as well as and regional economies.

“It’s really important because we want to make sure we’re investing in different communities especially rural communities here in British Columbia,” B.C. Minister of Environment and Parks Tamara Davidson said.

“We want to also make sure that we’re investing in small businesses and local economies.”

According to the province, the outdoor sector contributes nearly $5 billion a year to the B.C. economy, while supporting over 1,400 businesses and communities. This strategy along with some provincial investment is welcome news to the Outdoor Recreational Council of British Columbia (ORCBC), which notes a recent resurgence in people wanting to get outdoors.

“That was like maybe the one good thing that came out of COVID was this focus on outdoor recreation that it’s a real lifesaver during times of crisis,” ORCBC executive director Louise Pedersen added. “It brings us together and it was one of the only ways that we could spend time together, as well.”

“A few decades ago, outdoor recreation on the provincial side almost disappeared. There were very, very few people employed to take care of growing and maintaining outdoor recreation opportunities. In the last few years, we can see there has been this real momentum to grow the sector.”

The new strategy is also welcome news in Kamloops – a hub for outdoor recreation around the year.

“(I’m) excited to see the strategy unveiled this week. I love the five focus areas that they’re leaning into,” Lisa White, Tourism Kamloops’ director of community development & engagement told CFJC Today. “We’re so passionate about embracing our outdoor recreation in and around Kamloops and to see that alignment from the provincial government is just fantastic.”

Also in Kamloops this week, a new coalition comprised of businesses, organizations, volunteer groups and local governments was formed to help promote and protect B.C.’s outdoor sector.

“British Columbians and guests from around the world love our outdoors,” Andy Day, the CEO of BC Parks Foundation and inaugural chair of the coalition said, in a statement. “But it’s under a lot of pressure.”

“This new coalition is about increasing the health benefits of outdoor enjoyment in a way that is respectful of local use and stewardship. It’s about removing barriers and creating conditions for the long-term success of outdoor product and service businesses. And it’s about keeping outdoor places and wildlife healthy for generations to come.”

Added Davidson, “People are really excited to be [in Kamloops] and they are really excited to work on outdoor recreation and its so exciting to see.”

“One of the big things I’ve seen is people are just really passionate about protecting the trails and the outdoor spaces that they really use in their communities and I’m looking forward to seeing more of that.”
