MLA Stamer’s dashcam bill reverses course back to committee
KAMLOOPS — Kamloops North Thompson MLA Ward Stamer’s private members bill’s path into law has hit another speed bump.
Stamer is looking to see dash cameras mandated in commercial vehicles to help improve road safety.
Earlier this week, Stamer’s Bill M-217 received unanimous support during a standing vote to proceed past report stage ahead of third reading. However on Wednesday (May 7), the governing NDP passed ‘Motion 16’ to return the bill to committee stage. Despite their earlier approval, the NDP are looking for clarity on the commercial vehicle weight and description of the vehicle that will be impacted by the bill.
Stamer hopes the house will hold an unscheduled meeting to move the process through quickly. He’s hoping the bill will still have time to receive royal assent before the end of the session.
