Wildfire that triggers evacuation alert in the Cariboo being held at 66 hectares

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A wildfire that led the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) to issue an evacuation alert for eight properties is now classified as being held.

In an update Sunday (May 3), the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the Webster Creek wildfire nearly 50 kilometres northwest of Williams Lake is not expected to spread beyond its current 66 hectare perimeter.

The CRD has not lifted its evacuation alert as of Monday morning.

The Webster Creek wildfire was discovered Wednesday (April 29). The BCWS says it’s believed to have been caused by human activity.

As of the latest update Sunday, the BCWS says crews report seeing Rank 1 and 2 fire behaviour, meaning a smouldering ground fire and low vigour surface fire.

However, with warm and dry conditions forecast over the next several days, the BCWS says there is potential for increased smoke as available fuels are consumed within control lines.

“In addition, increased winds are forecast, which may further elevate fire behaviour on the wildfire today. Ground crews will continue working to secure the fire perimeter and prevent further growth,” the BCWS says.

The BCWS says 39 personnel, along with aviation and heavy equipment, are responding to the Webster Creek wildfire.

As of Monday morning, there are four active wildfires within the Cariboo Fire Centre. Of them, three are under control while one is being held.

The fire danger rating for the Cariboo Fire Centre as of Sunday is mostly high.
