Cariboo Regional District issues evacuation alert for eight parcels due to Webster Creek wildfire

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) issued an evacuation alert Thursday (April 30) in response to a wildfire burning nearly 50 kilometres northwest of Williams Lake.

The alert covers eight parcels over an area of just under 700 hectares near the 66-hectare Webster Creek wildfire.

Residents in the area will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to evacuation, although the CRD says they may receive limited notice due to changing conditions. CRD residents can receive emergency notifications through the Voyent Alert! app.

The Webster Creek wildfire was discovered Wednesday (April 29). The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says it’s believed to have been caused by human activity.

As of the latest update Thursday, the BCWS says the Webster Creek wildfire is burning out of control. Crews report seeing Rank 1 and 2 fire behaviour, meaning a smouldering ground fire and low vigour surface fire.

“Ground crews are setting up water delivery systems behind heavy equipment,” the BCWS says. “Heavy equipment is establishing control lines on the western flank of the fire and will progress to the eastern flank. Helicopter will be providing bucketing support to cool hot spots.”

The BCWS says 19 personnel, along with aviation and heavy equipment, are responding to the Webster Creek wildfire.
