Toxic drug death rate slows in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The rate of fatalities from toxic drugs in Kamloops has slowed significantly since the beginning of the year.


February totals released Wednesday (April 15) by the BC Coroners Service show 115 deaths province-wide due to toxic drugs, down from 150 in January.

To date, there have been three such deaths in Kamloops through the first two months of 2026 – two recorded in January and one in February.

That total represents a considerable slowdown in the death rate. Kamloops recorded 54 toxic drug deaths in 2025 after seeing 91 in 2024.

The agency says the vast majority of all deaths due to toxic drugs – 78.5 per cent – still take place inside residences.

Of those who have lost their lives to illicit drugs in 2026, 78 per cent were male and 69 per cent were between the ages of 30 and 59.
