City launches rental e-bikes and e-scooters in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Residents and visitors in Kamloops can now borrow a pair of wheels and handlebars when making their way around the city. 

The City of Kamloops announced Monday (March 2) that shared e-bikes and electric scooters are now available to rent for short trips. 

Through its agreement with Bird Canada – a Canadian company that aims to provide eco-friendly transportation to communities – the city says 255 electric scooters and 45 e-bikes will gradually be introduced to Kamloops streets. 

While initial deployment will focus on neighbourhoods with high demand such as downtown Kamloops and the Tranquille Market Corridor, the city says fleet distribution will be adjusted throughout the riding season based on trip patterns and demand. 

“The service supports the city’s transportation and climate goals by reducing reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, easing congestion during peak periods and offering a healthy lifestyle by encouraging everyday outdoor physical movement,” Purvez Irani, the city’s transportation manager says. “Shared micromobility also helps support the local economy by making it easier to travel between neighbourhoods and local businesses, often filling in the gap to get to a transit stop and reaching your final destination.”

Kamloops council voted to join the provincial electric kick scooter pilot project in 2024. 

The first phase of the city’s plans legalized the use of electric scooters on streets with speed limits up to 50 km/h or in designated cycling lanes on streets with speed limits above 50 km/h. The rollout of the rentable e-scooters and e-bikes is the second phase. 

As part of the provincial pilot, participating communities are allowed to set their own rules around the use of e-scooters. In Kamloops, there is no riding on highways and sidewalks, and only one person is allowed per bike and scooter. The city says residents and visitors must be at least 16 years old to ride a rental e-bike and e-scooter. 

The city’s plan is to offer the rental e-bikes and e-scooters until the provincial pilot expires in April 2028. From there, the city’s agreement with Bird Canada has options to extend the initiative if the province allows e-scooters to keep operating. 

To locate and unlock available e-bikes and e-scooters in Kamloops, residents and visitors are told to download the Bird Canada app. Riders are asked to park their device at designated parking areas identified within the app. The app is offering riders their first rental session for free using the code RIDEKAM. 

Residents and visitors can test an e-bike or e-scooter at the city’s Ride and Roll Community Day on Saturday, March 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Sandman Centre.
