Kamloops’ Hicketts to captain Team Canada at Spengler Cup

DAVOS, SUI. — One of Kamloops’ hockey heroes will lead Canada’s entry in the 2025 Spengler Cup tournament in Davos, Switzerland.

Defenceman Joe Hicketts was named team captain by Hockey Canada Thursday (Dec. 25).

Hicketts, 29, is under contract with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and is playing his third season for the Kings’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Ontario Reign.

The Spengler Cup is an invitational tournament held in Davos every year. It was first held in 1923.

Canada’s first game is scheduled for Boxing Day (Dec. 26) against U.S. Collegiate Selects. Puck drop is 11:15 a.m. Pacific time, broadcast on TSN-5.

The Canadians will also face hosts HC Davos in the round-robin stage. They’ll meet Sunday if Canada beats the U.S. Collegiate Selects, and Saturday if Canada loses.

Canada and Davos have each won 16 Spengler Cup titles, with Canada’s last win coming in 2019.
