Cleanup underway after train carrying loaded fuel cars derails west of Kamloops
CHERRY CREEK, B.C. — Cleanup is underway after 17 cars of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) freight train derailed near Cherry Creek, about 20 kilometres west of Kamloops, on Saturday (Nov. 1).
While no injuries were reported, four of the railcars that derailed about a kilometre east of Cherry Creek Station Road around 7:00 p.m. were loaded with fuel. Containment booms have been on Kamloops Lake set up as some fuel has leaked from two cars.
Five other railcars that derailed contained gypsum while another one was carrying pulp products. The other railcars that left the tracks were empty, though CKPC said three of them had previously contained gasoline.
“CPKC crews and equipment, including environmental teams, are on site conducting a full assessment and beginning work on a clean-up,” a statement from CPKC said. “Crews are coordinating with the BC Ministry of Environment and Parks.”
