WolfPack volleyball teams cruise to victory in Edmonton

EDMONTON — A winning start to the weekend for the TRU WolfPack volleyball teams in the Alberta capital.

The WolfPack women began their Canada West season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-23) win over the MacEwan Griffins.

Hail Ward, from Kamloops, and Keira Gent paced the WolfPack offence with 13 kills apiece while Ward also added two service aces and five blocks in the game. Myah Cressy added six blocks for TRU while Libby Meldrum chipped in with 38 assists.

“Overall we played a pretty solid road game,” WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm said. “I thought MacEwan played well, they were siding out well.”

The WolfPack men also got into the win column as they beat Griffins 3-1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19) for their first win of the season.

South Kamloops Secondary grad Alex Howard led the way for TRU with 17 kills, while Aiden Goetz had eight kills. Walker Sodaro added 40 assists and six digs for the WolfPack.

“It was a solid road win tonight,” WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly, who is pushing his players for a return to prominence, said post-game.

The WolfPack and Griffins will rematch in Edmonton Sunday (Oct. 25) afternoon. The women play at 2:00 p.m. PT and the men will follow suit at 3:30 p.m.
