COLLINS: He’s an evil man
SO SAYS STEPHEN HARPER. So say we all. The former prime minister made that comment a little while ago and it was resurrected on the weekend after President Putin and President Trump met to discuss Ukraine.
Harper is convinced that Putin is so power-hungry, he will eventually leave Russia in chaos. Harper says Putin is a real-life Bond villain, and says Putin is smart and has a great psychological ability to judge the abilities of his opponents. Harper added that it’s a tragedy Putin wasn’t imbued with any sense of ideals or higher purpose.
Those comments were all covered in various media, including the CBC, and show us the way the Russian president wound President Trump around his finger in Alaska last weekend. While Trump was busy trying to take all the credit, Putin was low-key, quietly making his moves, and by the end of the day, it was pretty obvious how this will play out. There will be some sort of ceasefire but it won’t be fair to anyone but Russia. Russia will keep the Crimea and all the lands they’ve picked up in this latest invasion.
Both Trump and Putin will blame the Ukrainian president for all the bad news and Mr. Zelenskyy will ride off into the sunset, either on his own accord or someone else’s (nudge, nudge).
