LYTTON, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service says an Incident Management Team has been assigned to the Cantilever Bar wildfire near Lytton, which is now estimated to be 1,262 hectares in size.

Its up from the previous estimate of 1,040 hectares and the BC Wildfire Service says the growth in recent days has largely been upslope to the west and north away from the Fraser River.

Fire behaviour is said to be between rank 2 and 4, meaning a vigorous surface fire with a moderate to high rate of speed, open flames, and the occasional candling of trees.

“Fire behaviour has the potential to increase with daytime heating and solar radiation which dried out fuels,” an update from the BC Wildfire Service said.

The Lytton First Nation ordered the evacuation of two of its reserves Thursday (July 31) morning and a reception centre was set up at the Battlefield Community Hall in Lytton.

Evacuation alerts remain in place effect for a number of other Lytton First Nation reserves as well as the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, the Skuppah First Nation and Siska First Nation.

There are 77 wildland firefighters battling this suspected human caused wildfire along with five helicopters. There are also 12 structure protection personnel responding to this incident.

“Crews are applying both direct and indirect attack methods while actioning this fire,” the BC Wildfire Service said. “Crews are utilizing small scale hand ignitions and fire suppression activities to tie into roads and natural features acting as guard along the eastern flank. The priority remains to be limiting fire growth toward values.”

“Aerial resources are supporting the response with water delivery, gear transport and reconnaissance.”

This is a developing story, and more information will be provided once it’s available.
