KAMLOOPS – The Calgary Stampede is one of the biggest events in Canada, and it’s also part of the inspiration behind a smaller-scale rodeo show in Kamloops.

To kick off Western Heritage Week, Kamloops Seniors Village played host to a group of secondary students involved in rodeo. Monday afternoon (July 7), residents had a ‘rootin’ tootin’ good time watching members of the BC High School Rodeo Association show off some of their roping skills.

The goal of the demonstration was to connect with some of the residents who used to be involved with rodeo themselves. The kids were more than thrilled to put on the show for and show off rodeo culture.

“It was so cool. I saw so many smiles. There were so many cool questions.” Macey Freemantle, the president of the BC High School Rodeo Association told CFJC, “It was really awesome for us to get out and be public as the B.C. High School Rodeo Association. It was really cool to have everyone out there, and awesome how many people showed up.”

For Greta Wurtz, Macey Freemantle & Wyatt Bremner, it also served as a bit of practice. Next week, they are off to the United States to take part in the National High School Finals Rodeo.

The hope is that one day they too can compete in the Calgary Stampede and be watched by seniors across Canada.
