Voting underway in District of Barriere by-election

Mar 1, 2025 | 8:21 AM

BARRIERE, B.C.— It’s by-election day in Barriere as residents head to the polls to elect a new mayor and a new councillor.

Residents will be able to vote at “the Ridge” at 4936 Barriere Town Road between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Saturday, March 1.

“If you haven’t voted in one of the previous Advanced Voting opportunities, [this is] your last chance,” the District of Barriere said, in a statement.

“Remember to bring two pieces of identification with you. One must include a signature and one must prove residency. If you are unsure if you have the proper documentation required to vote, or are unsure if you are eligible to vote, please come visit the polling station to speak with an Election Official. We’ll be happy to assist.”

The by-election is being held to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former Mayor Ward Stamer, who is now the MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson.

Former councillor Rob Kerslake, who had been serving as acting mayor, and Bill Humphreys, who served one term as mayor between 2011 and 2014, are running to succeed Stamer as mayor.

There are four candidates – Stephen Boylan, former councillor Alan Fortin, Bob George, and Brody Mosdell – running for Kerlslake’s old seat, as he was required to step down under the Local Government Act.

The successful candidates will serve a little under two years in office, with the next municipal election in B.C. scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026.
