Kamloops SAR urges caution around Tranquille Slot Canyons

KAMLOOPS — Another rescue call for a stranded hiker at Tranquille Slot Canyons has prompted new signage from BC Parks and another word of caution from Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR).

“Located in the Lac du Bois Grasslands north of Kamloops, the Tranquille Slot Canyons offer spectacular rock formations and a unique adventure. However, this route is more hazardous than it may appear on social media,” reads a statement from KSAR.

On Monday (Oct. 5), KSAR was called to assist a stranded hiker in the Tranquille Slot Canyons, but it was stood down within the hour when the hiker got out on their own.

“Warning signs are now posted at the site. Please take them seriously,” KSAR added

“KSAR has responded to numerous incidents here, helping hikers who became exhausted, overheated, stranded on steep terrain, or unable to get out without assistance.”

In July, nine KSAR members responded after a woman was stranded on steep terrain in the Slot Canyons early in the morning.

Another hiker had to be rescued via helicopter over the Labour Day long weekend after she was unable to walk to safety

KSAR said the Slot Canyons include steep, rocky, slippery terrain, limited egress and water-filled passages that make it a challenging hike in every season.

“Heat can cause dehydration and exhaustion,” KSAR noted. “Rain, snow, ice, cold temperatures and changing water levels add further hazards. Don’t assume the canyon is easy or safe at any time of year.”

As with any hike, KSAR urges people visiting the Tranquille Slot Canyons to research the route, check weather conditions, tell someone your plans and your expected return time, and bring supplies like food, water, suitable footwear and emergency supplies.

They also recommend assessing your fitness and experience, give yourself plenty of time for your return climb, and consider going with an experienced hiker.

“This is a rugged canyon adventure, not a casual stroll. Read and respect warning signs, know your limits, and be prepared to turn back,” added KSAR.

“If in doubt, don’t go in. Your safety matters more than reaching the canyon. If you get into difficulty or someone is in immediate danger, call 911.”
