KAMLOOPS — Vancouver-based law firm Slater Vecchio is launching a class action lawsuit on behalf of students who historically suffered sexual abuse at Happyvale Elementary School in Kamloops.

“Slater Vecchio is advancing a collective legal path to seek accountability for systemic failures at Happyvale Elementary School in Kamloops and to help former students who endured sexual abuse from school employees including a janitor known as ‘Mr. Mickey’ and teachers, to find a way forward,” said the law firm on its website.

The law firm said the suit is still in the early stages and the firm is seeking applicants to take part in the class action.

“There are survivors among the students who attended Happyvale Elementary School in Kamloops. They deserve to be heard,” said Slater Vecchio.

“If your time at Happyvale Elementary School in Kamloops was marked by sexual harm, please know you are not alone, and what happened was not your fault or your responsibility. You don’t have to have all the answers, or even know if you want to proceed; we simply want to listen to you.”

Happyvale Elementary School closed during the 2003-2004 school year due to declining enrolment numbers at the time. The facility housed multiple school district programs in the ensuing years and was renovated and reopened as a daycare facility in 2024.

Those wishing to apply for the class action can do so through Slater Vecchio’s website.
