YKA eyes 2027 completion for electric infrastructure project after receiving $1.3 million in funding

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Airport (YKA) is sharing details of how it plans to use $1.3 million in federal funding it recently received.

In a news release issued Thursday (Aug. 27), YKA says the funding from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program will cover 50 per cent of a new Field Electrical Centre, a standalone electrical system and standby power infrastructure.

The electrical infrastructure project will begin in 2026. YKA expects physical construction to be completed in 2027.

The new electrical infrastructure will replace aging equipment and is expected to provide a resilient power supply for essential airfield systems, including airfield lighting.

“Investing in the reliability of our airfield electrical infrastructure is fundamental to maintaining a safe and resilient airport,” Jim Moroz, YKA managing director says. “This project will modernize a critical component of our airfield infrastructure and ensure that Kamloops Airport is well positioned to continue supporting commercial aviation, emergency response, wildfire suppression and medevac operations for years to come.”
