Last-minute pause delays 50% U.S. tariff implement on Canadian goods, still no resolve
KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A last minute pause has temporarily spared Canadian exporters from seeing a new 50% U.S. tariff worth $28 billion in goods.
The tariff was scheduled to take effect shortly after midnight Eastern time Wednesday (Aug. 19), but U.S. President Donald Trump announced a last-minute halt.
Trump wrote that Canada and the United States “have a deal,” subject to finalized documents. Prime Minister Mark Carney was more cautious Wednesday morning, pointing to significant progress while saying negotiations were moving toward an agreement.
