B.C. officials say provincial state of emergency not necessary after calls from Cariboo MLA Doerkson
KAMLOOPS — Provincial officials say there is no need for a B.C.-wide state of emergency due to wildfires at this time, despite calls from the MLA in the South Cariboo and the opposition B.C. Conservatives.
“I am shocked we’re even having this debate,” Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson said in a video update on Saturday (Aug. 1). “This is not some slick political move on my part. I’m aware that local regional governments have states of emergency in place and the work they’ve done is incredible.”
“What I am looking for is our province to bolster those local states of emergency. In my mind, if it gets us two more firefighters, well then, ‘mission accomplished,’ but if it gets us 10 or 15 more helicopters, that’s even better.”
