Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA calling for state of emergency in response to wildfires
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Lorne Doerkson, the BC Conservative MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin, is calling on the provincial government to declare a local state of emergency in response to wildfires raging in the South Cariboo.
This comes as the Pear Lake fire has grown to approximately 1,039 square kilometres, prompting several evacuation orders and alerts from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and the Cariboo Regional District (CRD), as well as area First Nations.
Evacuation orders and alerts are also in place due to the 300 square kilometre French Bar Creek fire, the 178 square kilometre Bonanza Creek fire, the 43 square kilometre Rim Lake fire, and the 42 square kilometre Felker fire.
Strong winds in the forecast this weekend are also threatening to fan the flames and led to more aggressive fire behaviour.
