Strong winds anticipated for South Thompson region

“The weather systems driving this cold front are likely to be affected by local terrain as they cross the Coast Mountains, making wind directions difficult to forecast,” said the BCWS about the Big Bar Complex, which includes the massive Pear Lake wildfire.

“We suspect the winds will come from the northwest near French Bar, then shift to the southwest. Winds elsewhere in the complex may be from the southwest. There is a chance of thundercells, which may bring erratic winds from various directions.”

This comes after the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) expanded Evacuation Alerts and Orders in response to the Pear Lake wildfire.

In the Fraser Canyon, the winds will likely also fan the flames of the Brunswick Complex fires.

“A weakening ridge today (Aug. 1) will allow a cold front to move inland from the coast. As the front passes through, elevated winds are expected across the area,” said the BC Wildfire Service.

“Equipment, crews, and structure protection will be positioned strategically in anticipation of the coming winds.”

The BC Wildfire Service is also anticipates the growing Riley Creek fire to become more aggressive with Saturday’s weather.

“Smoke will be highly visible to the surrounding communities on days where the combination of stronger winds and a rise in temperatures have increased fire activity,” it noted.

“A cold front is forming in the area which is likely to strengthen winds.”

On Friday evening, the Lillooet-area wildfire also prompted an elevated evacuation response form the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) and the TNRD.

Environment Canada expects these strong winds to ease off by Saturday evening.
