CLINTON, B.C. — UPDATE (8:40 p.m.): The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has expanded evacuation orders in the Big Bar area because of the “rapidly escalating” Fiftynine Creek wildfire, which has ballooned in size in just a few hours.

Evacuation orders now cover 131 properties in Electoral Area “E” (Bonaparte Plateau), up from the 107 properties that were ordered to evacuate following a short-lived evacuation alert.

The updated order, issued at 7:30 p.m. Friday (July 17) evening, covers properties outlined here and on this map.

“If you are in the described area, you must leave immediately,” the TNRD said, in its warning. “A person must not enter the Evacuation Order area for purposes of residing, occupying, or visiting the area.”

“Anyone being newly evacuated near Meadow Lake should travel east to Highway 97 on Meadow Lake Road.”

An ESS Reception Centre has been set up at the Clinton Memorial Hall at 306 LeBourdais Road.

Another 63 addressed properties west of the current evacuation order area to Poison Lake Road and east to Highway 97 have also been put on evacuation alert, as outlined here.

“This evacuation alert is in place to prepare you to evacuate your premises or property should it be found necessary,” the TNRD said in its alert.

“Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an evacuation order; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.”

The Fiftynine Creek wildfire was sparked by lightning about 19 kilometres northwest of Clinton. It’s currently estimated to be 40 square kilometres in size, and the BC Wildfire Service said ground and aerial crews were responding, including heavy equipment and structure protection teams.

“Suppression actions are being taken to limit the spread of this unwanted wildfire,” the BC Wildfire Service said.

In a statement, the Village of Clinton said it is monitoring the fire, but clarified that the community is not currently subject to evacuation alerts or orders.

“This is a good reminder for residents to check that your Go Bag is ready,” added the Village of Clinton statement.
