Forest Critic Stamer fears Prince George mill closure could lead to more

KAMLOOPS — Much like Prince George, Kamloops is a forestry town, with the Kruger pulp mill providing a large percentage of the municipal tax base and employing hundreds of workers.

While the Prince George Canfor Northwood mill has closed, Forestry Critic Ward Stamer feels the Kruger mill in Kamloops is better prepared to handle several of the challenges facing the industry.

“There is concern throughout the province, and I know Kruger has done an excellent job of sourcing fibre within our region and being able to make themselves competitive,” said Stamer. “And I’m very thankful they are able to do that.”

“But I’ve heard through the grapevine last night and even as early as this morning, there could be another pulp mill sooner rather than later. Hopefully it’s not Kamloops. I think Kamloops is in a really good spot, realistically, compared to some of the other pulp mills.”

Stamer, who spoke with the forests minister on Tuesday (July 14), highlighted a shifting concern around other sections of the forestry industry that may be affected by the Prince George closure in the short term.

“It usually takes one or two or maybe even three sawmills with it. That is the other concern we have, that if the sawmills don’t have a way to get rid of their chips, they will fall as well,” Stamer told CFJC News. “Just because Northwood announced that it would be shutting down now, what is going to be the effect with the remaining sawmills in that area? How will that affect their bottom line? It may affect them to the point where they may have to look at curtailments or possibly layoffs, as well. And that is what we are really worried about right now.”
