CLINTON, B.C. — A pair of properties in the northwest portion of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) are under evacuation alert.

The TNRD issued an evacuation alert for 7129 and 7140 Empire Valley Road in Electoral Area “E” (Bonaparte Plateau), as well as any other properties in the regional district’s attached map, at 3:50 p.m. Monday (July 13) due to the French Bar Creek wildfire.

The TNRD says residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an evacuation order, although they may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.

The French Bar Creek wildfire is measured at nearly 1,246.3 hectares as of the BC Wildfire Service’s last update shortly after 12:00 p.m. Monday. It was discovered on July 4.

“The terrain, availability of water and access to the fire are posing challenges for responders,” the wildfire service states. “A new fire perimeter and size have been obtained. The updated fire size reflects the growth of the fire since Friday and is not a result of rapid spread.”

The wildfire nearly 45 kilometres northwest of Clinton is burning upslope in steep and rocky terrain. The wildfire service says the fuels are a mix of grassland in areas near the Fraser River and and timber in upslope and plateau areas.

According to the wildfire service, crews are focusing their efforts on accessible flanks on the west and northwest sides of the fire.

The French Bar Creek wildfire is showing Rank 1 and 2 fire behaviour, meaning it’s a smouldering ground fire with some visible open flame. The wildfire service says fire behaviour may increase due to the heat and windy conditions.
